The Kruger National Park

The Kruger National Park is the largest game reserve in South Africa. It covers 18,989 square km (7,332 sq mi) and extends 350 km (217 mi) from north to south and 60 km (37 mi) from east to west.

To the west and south of the Kruger Park are the two South African provinces of Limpopo and Mpumalanga. In the north is Zimbabwe, and to the east is Mozambique. It is now part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park, a peace park that links Kruger National Park with the Gonarezhou National Park in Zimbabwe, and with the Limpopo National Park in Mozambique.

The Kruger National Park

The Kruger National Park is the largest game reserve in South Africa. It covers 18,989 square km (7,332 sq mi) and extends 350 km (217 mi) from north to south and 60 km (37 mi) from east to west.

To the west and south of the Kruger National Park are the two South African provinces of Limpopo and Mpumalanga. In the north is Zimbabwe, and to the east is Mozambique. It is now part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park, a peace park that links Kruger National Park with the Gonarezhou National Park in Zimbabwe, and with the Limpopo National Park in Mozambique.

The park is part of the Kruger to Canyons Biosphere, an area designated by the United Nations Education and Scientific Organisation (UNESCO) as an International Man and Biosphere Reserve (the "Biosphere").

The Kruger Park has 8 main gates that allow entrance to the different camps. The names of these gates are Paul Kruger, Numbi, Malelane, Crocodile Bridge, Punda Maria, Orpen, Phabeni, Phalaborwa and Pafuri.

In 2002, Kruger National Park, Gonarezhou National Park in Zimbabwe, and Limpopo National Park in Mozambique were incorporated into the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park.

The Big 5

The Kruger National Park itself is tops when talking of Big 5 safaris in Mpumalanga - either at the park camps or private lodges. But these animals also abound on the private reserves in the Sabi Sand, Timbavati and Klaserie areas. Some lodges pride themselves on showing the Big 5 to guests in record time, and you'll even walk away with a certificate.

Be prepared to be awed. Seeing a leopard scant metres above your vehicle, dozing in the bough of a tree, one eye lazily scanning the road below, is an astounding sight.

Spotting a black rhino half-hidden in thick shrubs, or finding a pride of lions in the shade after a kill, interacting with cubs and resting up during the daylight hours, is pure undiluted Africa.

Watching a large herd of elephants move soundlessly across the road in search of food, or facing down a Cape buffalo in the same road - these are all priceless moments.

But know that you're dealing with wild animals, famed precisely because they are so dangerous and powerful. There are rules of engagement relating to Big 5 safaris in South Africa. Heed the words of your ranger at all times.

Learn bush etiquette, dress codes, silent times and, if possible, the basic habits of the Big 5. And once you've done Big 5 activities in Mpumalanga, it's time to ‘sweat the small stuff' and learn about wondrous creatures like the dung beetle...

The Cape West Coast

The West Coast is a region of contrast and beauty. Stretching over 400km from south to north, the region and its people offer the visitor a surprising variety of travel experiences and destinations. These include the beautiful, and at times desolate, coastal region with its magnificent lagoon and numerous small fishing villages; the grain and wine farms of the Swartland and Sandveld; the citrus, Rooibos and wines of the Olifantsrivier Valley; the spectacular magnificence of the scenic Cederberg and Groot Winterhoek Mountains and the arid beauty of Namaqualand and the Knersvlakte.

The West Coast Region is located along the South-West Coast of South Africa within the Western Cape Province. It extends from Blaauwberg in the Cape Metropolitan Area in the south, to the provincial border in Namaqualand in the north.

The West Coast Region borders on the Winelands District in the south, the Breede River District in the east, and the Northern Cape Province in the north and east. On the west, the region borders on the Atlantic Ocean, with its cold Benguela Current, which plays in important role in the ecology of the region.

Olifants River Wine Route & Namaqualand

Before you visit the Olifants River Wine Route, know that there are no whitewashed manors with Cape Dutch gables, nor any oak trees, nor 5-star restaurants. They have a wine co-op truck named Black Betsie, and their website carries an over-18 age restriction (South Africa’s legal drinking age). This isn’t your regular hop-off, hop-on wine tour.

The Olifant’s River Wine Route is NOT your typical Cape wine route. Instead there are the beautiful landscapes of the Cape West Coast, where you can be beside the sea, atop a mountain and knee-deep in daisies all in a day. If you’re up for a tasting adventure, in countryside that’s as complex as a fine wine's bouquet, the Olifants River Valley Wine Route will pop your cork.

The Stellenbosch Wine Route

The Stellenbosch Wine Route is arguably the country´s most famous, and the Stellenbosch Wine of Origin area includes 106 cellars - most of which are open to the public. Enjoy a long day´s wine tasting, and wine buying and you´ll sip more than our great South African wines - you´ll taste our South African way of life.

The heart of the town lies somewhere near the oak-lined Dorp Street. With its venerable old buildings, this is the University´s main thoroughfare, where modern student life sits comfortably side by side with our history and architectural heritage.

Pilanesberg National Park

The Pilanesberg National Park is one of the most accessible South African game reserves. It is the 4th largest in the country and is set high in the Pilanesberg mountain range, traversing the floor of an ancient, long-extinct volcano. Pilanesberg features all the major mammal species including the Big 5 – lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo.

The Augrabies Falls & Augrabies National Park

If you ever wonder why the Augrabies Falls are referred to by the local Khoi people as the place of great noise, then come and experience it yourself. And if you are lucky to find the Orange River overflowing, you will experience the full might of the water as it cascades thunderously down the 56m-high falls, producing such a deafening sound that you will not forget the experience even after you've left the place.

The Augrabies Falls South Africa, which is located 120km to the west of Upington in Northern Cape, is not the only attraction in this area. The falls is enclosed inside a park known as the Augrabies Falls National Park, giving you a chance to admire a variety of plant and animal species in their natural habitat.

Namaqualand

The Namaqualand dessert region of South Africa is world-famous for its stunning display of spring desert flowers. Found in the Northern Cape province, and ideal for hiking and driving tours, the area's exquisite natural beauty has to be seen to be believed.

Namaqualand's desert flowers are one of the most incredible spectacles in the world.

This arid desert area bursts into a spectacular and seemingly endless carpet of flowers come spring – this vast bloom happens roughly between August and October, depending on weather patterns – due to dormant seeds that lie in the dry earth for months waiting for the rains to descend.

The area stretches for approximately 500 kilometres north up the Cape coast and for 100 kilometres inland, and for most of the year it seems to be a dusty, flat and bleak semi-desert with diamonds as its only jewels.

But then, seemingly overnight, it becomes a veritable ocean of colour and scent.

Approximately 4 000 species of plants can be found here amongst the desert flowers of Namaqualand. Strange plants, such as the Namaqua Halfmens, dot the landscape, adding to its drama, while parks, like the Goegap and Hester Malan nature reserves, protect this unique and gorgeous landscape where more than 30 of South Africa's succulent plant species grow.

For a rugged travel experience visitors can embark on the 642 kilometre Namakwa 4x4 route, which runs along the Orange River to the ocean. The Richtersveld National Park in the Namaqualand's north-west corner, which is renowned for its Namaqualand desert flowers, also offers the country's largest mountain desert, which extends into Namibia.

The Namaqualand may be a desert for most of the year but its spectacle of spring flowers will stun even the most jaded traveller.

The desert flowers of Namaqualand typically bloom in late winter and early spring, a period lasting roughly from late August to October.

The Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens

Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden truly deserves being the largest of South Africa's 8 national gardens and one of the world's leading botanical gardens, with its stunning scenery and themed gardens such as the Fragrance Garden and the Medicinal Garden. This natural attraction is a must-see on the itinerary of anyone visiting Cape Town.

World Heritage Sites

South Africa is home to eight of the world's official heritage sites, as determined by Unesco's World Heritage Committee.

The committee seeks to encourage the identification, protection and preservation of cultural and natural heritage around the world considered to be of "outstanding value to humanity".

Internationally, there are 851 World Heritage sites in 141 countries (as of April 2008). South Africa has a total of eight - four cultural, three natural and one mixed (cultural and natural) site.

The Garden Route

The Cape Garden Route is a mix of modern golf courses, ancient forests, secluded artist communities, retirement estates, modern malls, craft centres, mountain hideaways and beach holidays. A large number of interesting and creative people have come to live down here, drawn to this magnificent stretch of coastline.

Suddenly one looks up.......sniffs the air with her long trunk, lets out a long eerie trumpet as she senses the presence of humans. They turn and disappear from sight in seconds. Just then a troop of baboons appear, picking at the elephant dung for seeds. A flock of crowned cranes fly overhead and land at the edge of a nearby lagoon. A crocodile lunges from the water and sinks below. Two buffalo come down to drink, the crocodile emerges again and they're off.

Robben Island

Declared a World Heritage Site in 1999 and housing a world-class museum, it is here that Nelson Mandela and other anti-apartheid activists were incarcerated.

This bean-shaped island is situated in Table Bay with superb views over Cape Town. Its high point is only 30 metres above sea level at Minto Hill, atop which is the oldest lighthouse in the southern hemisphere.

V&A Waterfront

The Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, built on top of part of the docks of the Port of Cape Town, is one of the city's most popular shopping venues, with several hundred shops and the Two Oceans Aquarium. Part of the charm of the V&A, as it is locally known, is that the Port continues to operate and visitors can watch ships enter and leave. The V&A also hosts the Nelson Mandela Gateway, through which ferries depart for Robben Island. It is possible to take a ferry from the V&A to Hout Bay, Simon's Town and the Cape Fur Seal colonies on Seal and Duiker Islands.

Cape Town

Cape Town is not only the most popular international tourist destination in South Africa, it is Africa's main tourist destination even overtaking Cairo. This is due to its good climate, natural setting, and relatively well-developed infrastructure. The city has several well-known natural features that attract tourists, most notably Table Mountain, which forms a large part of the Table Mountain National Park and is the back end of the City Bowl. Reaching the top of the mountain can be achieved either by hiking up, or by taking the Table Mountain Cableway. Cape Point is recognised as the dramatic headland at the end of the Cape Peninsula. Many tourists also drive along Chapman's Peak Drive, a narrow road that links Noordhoek with Hout Bay, for the views of the Atlantic Ocean and nearby mountains. It is possible to either drive or hike up Signal Hill for closer views of the City Bowl and Table Mountain.

Many tourists also visit Cape Town's beaches, which are popular with local residents. Due to the city's unique geography, it is possible to visit several different beaches in the same day, each with a different setting and atmosphere. Beaches located on the Atlantic Coast tend to have very cold water from the Benguela current which originates from the Southern Ocean. The water at False Bay beaches is often warmer by up to 10 °C (18 °F). Both coasts are equally popular, although the beaches in affluent Clifton and elsewhere on the Atlantic Coast are better developed with restaurants and cafés, with a particularly vibrant strip of restaurants and bars accessible to the beach at Camps Bay. Boulders Beach near Simon's Town is known for its colony of African penguins. Surfing is popular and the city hosts the Red Bull Big Wave Africa surfing competition every year.

Cape Town's Table Mountain

Table Mountain in South Africa reaches 1 086 m at its highest point - Maclear's Beacon - and rises above the coastal city of Cape Town in the Western Cape Province, offering stunning views over both the ocean and the city. The flat-topped sandstone natural attraction is approximately 3 km long and is one of the only mountains in the world that is nearly entirely encompassed by a metropolitan area.

Table Mountain, which nestles in South Africa’s Cape Town, is renowned for its natural beauty. Spectacular views of the ocean and city and its biodiverse fauna and flora make it a must-see natural attraction. The mountain can be explored on foot via walking trails of varying difficulty or by taking the Cableway to the summit.

Drakensberg

The Drakensberg mountains of South Africa or uKhahlamba (the Barrier of Spears) is a 200-kilometre-long mountainous wonderland and world heritage site. The largest proportion of the Drakensberg area falls in the province of KwaZulu-Natal.

The Zulu people named it 'Ukhahlamba' and the Dutch Voortrekkers 'The Dragon Mountain'. The Drakensberg Mountains, with their awe-inspiring basalt cliffs, snowcapped in winter, tower over riverine bush, lush yellowwood forests and cascading waterfalls, form a massive barrier separating KwaZulu-Natal from the Kingdom of Lesotho. The only road access to the Drakensberg is via Sani Pass, which at the top, boasts the highest pub on Africa, 3 000 metres above sea level.
